Website content checklist for clients (free, printable)
Last updated · by Cody Johnston
What content do you need from a client for a website?
Most small-business websites need: logo files and brand colours, copy for each page, services and prices, original photos, testimonials with permission, contact details and hours, social links, access to the domain, hosting and Google tools, and a named person who approves content. The free checklist below covers each item.
Copy, print or download this checklist and send it to your client at kickoff. It covers what a typical small-business site needs. Delete what does not apply.
The checklist
Project: ________ · Content due: ________ · Launch date: ________
Brand
- Logo files (SVG or high-res PNG, plus any light/dark or icon versions)
- Brand colours (hex codes if you have them)
- Fonts or brand guidelines document
- Favicon / social profile image, if different from the logo
Words (copy)
- Business name exactly as it should appear, plus tagline
- Home page: who you help, what you offer, why choose you (2–4 short paragraphs)
- About page: your story, team bios
- Services or products: name, short description, price or "from" price for each
- Frequently asked questions and answers
- Calls to action: what should a visitor do (call, book, buy, email)?
Images and media
- Photos of you, your team, your premises and your work (originals, not screenshots)
- Product photos
- Videos or links to videos
- Confirmation you own or have licensed every image
Trust
- Testimonials or reviews, with permission to publish and the name to show
- Logos of clients, certifications or associations (with permission)
- Case studies or portfolio items
Contact and legal
- Business address, phone, email, hours
- Service area
- Social media profile links
- Privacy policy and terms (or confirmation you need them written)
- Business number / registration details if they must appear
Access and logins
- Domain registrar (who, and who can log in)
- Current hosting and current website admin
- Google Business Profile, Analytics, Search Console
- Email marketing, booking, payments or shop platforms to connect
- Share logins in a password manager or secure note, never plain email
Decisions
- Who on your side approves the content, and who has final say
- Pages you want (site map) and any sites you like
- Deadline for content, and the launch date it unlocks
How to use it well
- Give a due date for each section rather than one date for everything.
- Add an example next to anything ambiguous ("About copy: about 150–300 words, like this").
- Ask for brand colours as hex codes, and show the client what you mean, for example:
#1F4E79#F2A541
- Tell the client which items block the launch and which can come later.
- Use one shared place for everything. Read how to get website content from clients.
